Many thanks for your email concerning the ACTA agreement. I am delighted to be able to inform you that ACTA has been defeated in the plenary session of the European Parliament by 478 votes to 39, with 165 abstentions. This represents the biggest ever defeat of a legislative proposal from the Commission in the European Parliament. An earlier attempt by the pro-ACTA MEPs to postpone the vote was defeated.

Today, in a historic vote, ACTA was swept away by a massive 478 MEPs against it. Only 39 MEPs spoke out in absolute favour. 165 abstained. Greens, GUE and the social democrats voted against, the conservatives and liberals were split.

Thank you for your email on the subject of rejection of the ACTA agreement (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement).

Personally, I think that the agreement, in its present form, can not be adopted by the European Parliament, because first we have to clarify the part concerning the Internet issues, in particular the problem of copyright protection. For this reason, on 4^th of July I will vote against the ACTA agreement during the Plenary Session.

Thank you very much for your consistent effort and attention to ACTA.

As a member of GUE/NGL, I consider ACTA as a wrong way to deal with challenges and problems regarding Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Nowadays, it is undoubtedly important to prevent counterfeiting and to preserve the interests of artists and the creative sector in a digital environment. However, ACTA does not provide right answers, and in my view was never intended to do so. From the beginning of the negotiations on ACTA, large corporations from film, music and software industry were very involved in it and were striving to establish an agreement designed to enforce their commercial interests.

Dear Afroditi,
I have been fighting acta since 2008 and during the whole process I have considered ACTA completely biased towards protecting business interests, not culture, economy, consumers, the right to access to medicines, free speech and not even protecting legitimate rights to goods legally purchased. Furthermore it limits free speech and legal certainty by strentghening the current texts on DRM-tools and that it contains many provisions that are very unclear and leaves too much room of manouvre for the business itself and the court to decide and we all know who has most resources to put into a legal procedure.

Thanks for your mail. As you may know, The Greens/EFA group is at the heart of the fight against ACTA. Acta threatens indeed fundamental rights of the European citizens. It also poses a serious threat to access to medicines, for the protection of biodiversity or the right for our farmers to freely seed.
